Crete: Learning Greek on the Road

Greek roadsigns are a great aid in learning Greek, not only because they give us the Latinized version of the Greek names, but especially by telling us about pronunciation - about which syllable gets the emphasis. Just watch for the little accent symbols somewhere atop one or more vocals.

Please don't confuse accent symbols with shotgun holes ... as with Litsarda or Souri ...

Agios Pavlos     Almyrida

Aptera     Drapanos

Gavalohori     Georgioupoli

Kalamitsi     Kalyves

Kambia     Kefalas

Kokkino Horio     Likotinara

Litsarda     Paleloni

Plaka     Ram

Sellia     Souri

Tsivaras     Vamos

This page is an exercise to find out whether or not we can get all letters of the Greek alphabet together by collecting the names of villages in the Apokoronas area of Crete - just for starters!
Readers with a camera are kindly requested to send in similar images of their village or town!

The sign from Georgioupoli was donated to this site by Baukje Vrij.
